Course Description

Examines concepts and practical application of fundamental management skills such as planning, organizing, staffing, communicating, leading, training, managing conflict, controlling, performance management, ethics and problem solving. Provides an introduction to business management theory. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Management Fundamentals is an introductory course that provides an overview of what management is and why it is needed.  It identifies levels of management, the primary focus of each level, different management styles, and decision making and problem solving processes.

Course will fulfill required and/or elective credit for Portland Community College’s Business Administration or Degree Programs.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the overall role and importance of the management function.

  2. Apply principles of management to business processes of staffing, performance management, and conflict resolution.

  3. Develop goals, objectives, and plans that will enhance productivity, quality, and cost control.

  4. Apply leadership strategies for employee motivation in order to lead a group of employees to perform effectively as a team.

  5. Utilize skills in quality performance and supervision to enhance management career opportunities.

  6. Apply various supervision laws and policies to the current workplace.

  7. Demonstrate effective workplace communication skills using standard business terminology.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts described in the required competencies by any combination of the following:

  • Various individual and/or group skill-building activities such as role-plays, case studies, or other exercises geared toward critical analysis of course concepts.

  • Written assignments or oral reports designed to integrate course material into personal experience or experiences of others.

  • Complete exams comprised of essay and/or objective questions, or an individual and/or team project or paper which requires integration, application, and critical examination of course concepts, issues, and themes.
