Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed to complete the second stage of the Commercial Pilot Rotorcraft Helicopter flight training and to meet the
requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a Commercial Pilot Certificate and an Instrument Rating.
Lecture / discussion / demonstration sessions and lab practice supported by written and multi-media materials will present to the student the knowledge and skills necessary to perform oral and practical tests which are required to obtain a Commercial Pilot Rotorcraft Helicopter certificate.
Lecture / discussion / demonstration sessions and lab practice supported by written and multi-media materials will present to the student the knowledge and skills necessary to perform oral and practical tests
which are required to obtain a Rotorcraft Helicopter Instrument rating.
This course will be taught following or concurrently with AVS 150 and AVS 130.
Knowledge areas that are taught in AVS 150 will be reviewed and revised if necessary to meet the completion requirements. A minimum of 59.6 hrs of flight training lab time is required for completion of the course along with the minimum performance standards listed below.
All knowledge areas that are taught in AVS 130 have to be reviewed and revised by an appropriately rated instructor to meet the
requirements of 14 CFR Part 61.65 for the FAA written and practical test.
A minimum of 40.0 hrs of actual or simulated instrument time will be included in the minimum of 59.6 hrs of flight training lab time required for completion of the course along with the minimum performance standards listed below. A maximum of 20.0 hrs out of 40.0 hrs of actual or simulated instrument time could be flown in a flight-training device with an authorized instructor. A
maximum of 5.0 hrs out of 20.0 hrs of actual or simulated instrument time in the aircraft could be flown in a airplane with an authorized instructor.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1. Schedule and take a Commercial Helicopter FAA practical test.
2. Obtain a Commercial Helicopter certificate.
3. Schedule and take a Helicopter Instrument practical test.
4. Obtain an Instrument rating.
5. Exercise good judgment and make safe decisions as a Commercial Pilot in both VFR and IFR operations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the Beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate and record student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade. Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing. The instructor will immediately grade each stage check, and if necessary, have students complete a review and retake of the exam, until a minimum score of 70% is achieved. Evaluation levels will target those defined by FAA-S-8081-HD (or subsequent edition) Commercial Pilot Practical Test Standards, and required under 14CFR 141, FAA Approved Training Course.
For the embedded Instrument Rotorcraft Helicopter Rating, the instructor will review the knowledge areas covered in AVS-130 with focus on helicopter specific regulations and procedures. Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing. The instructor will immediately grade each Instrument Proficiency check, and if necessary, have students complete a review and retake of the exam, until a minimum score of 70% is achieved. Evaluation levels will target those defined by FAA-S-8081-4C (or subsequent edition) Instrument Rating Practical Test Standards.
