Course Description

Introduces ASL/English interpreting as a profession. Includes the roles and functions of interpreters, employment options, and an analysis of the demands and rewards of the career path. Covers fundamental interpreting skills and reviews linguistic and grammatical principles and conventions; explores strategies for developing ASL and English vocabulary and skills for effective communication.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Use knowledge of duties, responsibilities, roles and functions of interpreters, the job market and career options to make an informed decision about a career in the field of ASL/English interpreting.
  • Apply grammatical and linguistic conventions to text analysis and effective communication.
  • Describe to others the importance of memory, visualization, paraphrasing, summarizing, and abstraction in the interpreting process.
  • Employ intralingual translation of source texts using principles of text analysis.

Course Activities and Design

Activities include readings, lectures, discussions, small group presentations, analysis of job descriptions, text analysis, grammatical and linguistic exercises, and guest presenters.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment strategies include written quizzes, exams, and assignments, including a research paper.

  • Settings in which interpreters work, job requirements, opportunities and earning potential
  • Personality analysis and use of career profile instruments
  • Basic grammar: concepts and terms and how it applies to translation and interpreting
  • Basic linguistics: concepts, terms, and how it applies to translation and interpreting
  • The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and certification systems
  • Text analysis concepts, terms, and exercises
  • Cognitive processing exercises and other pre-interpreting skills
  • Strategies for developing enhanced fluency in both English and ASL
