Course Description

Covers basic mathematical operations and their application to the clinical laboratory setting. Presents a review of arithmetic, algebra, scientific notation, rounding, significant figures, conversions, measurement systems, solutions and concentrations, dilutions, titers, and other mathematical calculations commonly used in the clinical laboratory setting.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Convert between units of measure commonly employed in the clinical laboratory.
  2. Calculate how to prepare reagents and specimens for laboratory testing, given the required amounts, concentrations, and equipment limitations.
  3. Report results appropriately.

Course Activities and Design

This online course is delivered through lectures and other methods that may include, audio-visual presentations, handouts, web-based instructional media, and other educationally sound practices. Application of clinical laboratory mathematics skills with be further developed on-the-job training. with classroom instruction focusing on the preparation needed to perform laboratory tasks. There is no laboratory component in this course.
