Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (Mathematical Practice 1)
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP.3)
  4. Model with mathematics and use appropriate tools strategically. (MP.4-5)
  5. Attend to precision and look for and make use of structure. (MP.6-7)
  6. Identify and show regularity in repeated reasoning. (MP.8)

Outcomes are based on OACCRS - Mathematics Handbook Standards of Mathematical Practice.

Aspirational Goals

  • Exhibit persistence, self-motivation, self-advocacy, and personal responsibility
  • Reflect upon, assess, identify, and celebrate one’s own learning gains
  • Advance knowledge and skills to make independent choices as a citizen, family member, worker, and life-long learner
  • Enhance employability attributes
  • Reduce math anxiety
  • Destigmatize the use of scientific calculators

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Complete a post-test of math word problems using a GED approved calculator
  • Take ALEKS test and place into Math 20 or higher
  • Take CASAS math pre and progress test and improve one level
  • Pass at least one real-world application activity
  • Pass at least five in-class examinations - Whole numbers, fractions and decimals testing without calculator. No more than 50% of any test can be multiple choice
  • Complete at least two or more of the following measures: At least one written explanation of a mathematical concept, take-home examinations, graded homework, quizzes, group projects, in-class activities, attendance, portfolios, individual projects, individual student conference, community based service learning

OACCRS Standards of Mathematical Content:

Numbers and Operations: Base 10 and Decimals

  • Understand place value.
  • Use place value understanding and the properties of operations to add and subtract.
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
  • Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.
  • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

The Number System

  • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

Number and Operations: Fractions

  • Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.
  • Perform operations with fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Operations & Algebraic Thinking

  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
  • Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division.
  • Solve problems involving the four operations and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic.
  • Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
  • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples.

Expressions and Equations

  • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

Geometry

  • Reason with shapes and their attributes.
  • Solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Measurement and Data

  • Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.
  • Relate addition and subtraction to length.
  • Represent and interpret data.
  • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate to area of multiplication and addition.
  • Geometric measurement: recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures.
  • Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.

Statistics and Probability

  • Develop understanding of statistical variability.
  • Summarize and describe distributions.

Language Goals

Language goals are to support the construction of math understanding at RD 90 or CASAS 217 or higher. Upon exercising new content or using new domain specific language (Tier 3 Vocabulary), language skills drop a level until the new vocabulary and concepts are integrated into the student's usage base.

For more detailed descriptions and applications see this document:  Oregon Adult College and Career Readiness Standards Detailed Descriptions and Applications for ABE 0782

Conventions of Standard English

Language Anchor 1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Knowledge of Language

Language Anchor 3. Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, make effective choices for meaning or style, and comprehend more fully when reading or listening.

Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

Language Anchor 4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown vocabulary as well as words and phrases with multiple meanings by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate
