Course Description

Provides advanced training in motivational interviewing (MI). Explores topics such as: ambivalence, discord, and change talk. Covers MI techniques with specific populations and contexts related to addiction counseling. Prerequisites: AD 120E, AD 121E, AD 122E, AD 124E, AD 140E, AD 141E. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced MI techniques and strategies in a clinical practice.

  2. Demonstrate principles of ambivalence and discord in MI and how to integrate them.

  3. Apply MI techniques in a variety of cultural contexts. 

  4. Develop advanced effective strategies for promoting and eliciting change talk in MI.

  5. Apply ethical principles in MI practice.
