Course Description

Provides advanced training in multicultural counseling for addiction professionals. Explores a deeper understanding of treatment considerations regarding the intersection of culture, identity, mental health and addiction. Focuses on cultivating cultural humility and providing effective counseling services to diverse populations. Prerequisites: AD 120E, AD 121E, AD 122E, AD 124E, AD 141E, HUS 101, HUS 102, HUS 108, and (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe ethical and legal considerations in multicultural counseling for addiction.

  2. Identify the impact of social and cultural factors in treatment outcomes and recovery.

  3. Integrate cultural humility into practice by using case studies.

  4. Provide an in-class case presentation using case studies showing full integration of learning.
