Course Description

Covers skills required for addiction counseling of individuals. Emphasizes in-class practice and feedback. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify transference and countertransference in client and clinician relationships.
  2. Use active listening strategies and techniques to engage with clients.
  3. Counsel clients with substance use disorders individually.
  4. Make constructive responses to client’s reactions and responses.
  5. Apply key components of client-centered, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed individual addiction counseling.
