Course Description

Introduces ethical and legal issues applicable to addiction counseling in a clinical setting. Explores the impact of one’s personal value system on decision making in addiction counseling. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the major components of ethical codes for an addiction counselor.
  2. Apply a decision-making model to address ethical dilemmas relating to addiction counseling.
  3. Identify federal and state laws and agency regulations regarding the treatment of substance-use disorders.
  4. Identify how one’s personal value system impacts ethical decision making in addiction counseling.
  5. Describe how ethics inform the documentation of addiction treatment.
