Course Description

Introduces key concepts and theories of addiction science. Covers client-centered, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed frameworks of addiction counseling practice. Taught completely in Spanish. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify the essential skills and characteristics needed for an effective addiction counselor.
  2. Develop a practice of maintaining relevance in addiction counseling.
  3. Describe the continuum of available treatment services.
  4. Summarize key components of client-centered, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed frameworks of practice.
  5. Identify principles of evidenced-based treatment of addiction.
  6. Identify rapport-building methods between clinician and clients.
  7. Describe foundational theories of addiction science.
  8. Describe historical and current foundations of addiction science.
