Lecture/Lab Hours:
Lab Hours:

Course Description

Introduces flux cored arc welding theory and techniques. Covers basic blueprint reading skills. Explores the essential variables of the gas shielded flux core (FCAW-G) process. Provides opportunities for welding and air carbon arc cutting (CAC-A) in all positions. Prerequisites: WLD 190 or department permission.

Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format. This course includes classroom discussions, videos and lab demonstrations of technical skills.  Course outcomes will include: safety, theoretical concepts, layout, fabrication, oxy-fuel cutting, carbon arc gouging and flux cored arc welding.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
  2. Interpret blueprints to lay out, prepare, and assemble weld joints.
  3. Operate oxy-fuel cutting systems.
  4. Use CAC-A in all positions.
  5. Use FCAW-G to weld common joint assemblies in all positions.

Course Activities and Design

This will be the second course in the Maritime Welding sequence.  Each concept will be delivered in a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate the development of course outcomes. The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection and welding tests.
