Course Description

Examines Black Deaf people in America. Focuses on the history, education, community, culture and psychological forces that influence the Black Deaf experience. Concentrates on the social, political and cultural development of a unique group of people and carefully examines the intersectionalized identity that can result from being part of both the Deaf community and the Black community through a critical theory lens of oppression and resilience.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to: 

  1. Examine racial identity, cultural norms, and societally granted privileges in relation to Black Deaf people. 
  2. Analyze through a critical framework the implications of being a part of an intersectionalized Black Deaf population within American Deaf culture.
  3. Discuss notable Black Deaf achievements, figures and historical issues which shaped Black Deaf people’s experience in America.
  4. Examine the implications of systemic structures impacting Black Deaf children.
  5. Explain the functions of Black Deaf organizations and agencies within the Black Deaf community.
