Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and coaching in team sports. Covers skill-related components of fitness, seasonal practice planning, sport-specific drills, and coaching philosophies, methodologies, and styles. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Design and implement a team sport practice session to improve fitness, skill, and performance in athletes.
  2. Apply effective coaching strategies in a team sports setting.
  3. Apply motivational strategies to enhance individual and team performance.
  4. Explore current coaching trends and employment opportunities related to team sports.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. Apply coaching philosophies and objectives
  2. Discuss ethical coaching practices
  3. Design practice sessions: Warm-ups, skill drills, tactical work, conditioning, and cool-downs. 
  4. Demonstrate a variety of communication and listening strategies
  5. Apply motivational theories and concepts
  6. Incorporate drills for skill acquisition
  7. Discuss mental health and athlete wellness
  8. Discuss safety concerns as they relate to team sport equipment
  9. Incorporate skill-related physical fitness component assessment, interpretation, and progressions
