The seamless addition of the groping hands and arms to the tree trunks mysteriously evokes a psychic unease as in the best Surrealist images. This is achieved by image juxtaposition but deepened by the delicate control of the muted color tones. This striking photograph by Rock Creek student Thomas Kohler was awarded the Purchase Prize in the 2019 Student Art Show and added to the permanent collection.
