This was painted on site in fall from Mount Calvary Cemetery, between NW Skyline and Barnes Road. This view is stylized and the houses have been flattened to be parallel to the picture plane as if the view were being opened like a lady's fan. In the distance grey nursery sheds lie along the hills like giant discarded sewer pipes. The bank of Douglas Firs in the upper left resemble basalt more than trees. Such transformations routinely happen when anyone is distractedly looking, but artists know to honor such moments as windows into seeing, and not some fleeting and easily dismissed hallucination. Out of such moments paintings are born.
