Although Angelina Woolley's painting style is straightforward, Eighteenth Birthday is an enigmatic painting. Woolley has used a three-panel format, known as a triptych, to unify three different scenes. Is the baby on the left the young man we see on the right, or is the baby his son? We do not know for sure, and that adds to the mystery of this narrative.
