It is impossible to truly know why certain motifs attract artists to paint them. There is nothing remarkable about this view of a bunch of generic floating metal sheds framed by trees on Hayden Island, yet this scene conveyed to the artist a mysterious sense of secrecy and mythic heroism. Painting has the capacity to be both of the world and outside it and artists would do well to trust their sense of excitement in looking – wherever it takes them.
