In her direct and colorful paintings, Mary Josephson seeks to reveal the inner life of her subjects—who they are more than what they look like. She has been influenced by the time she has spent in the Southwestern United States and in Southern California, near the border with Mexico. As Josephson notes, that experience "taught me to appreciate and respect other cultures and different modes of expression."
