New Media Arts in Berlin

public art sculpture

Overview

This program begins in Portland, Oregon by learning about the history of artists working with new technologies and then explores projects created by contemporary New Media artists in Berlin, Germany. We’ll learn about historical and contemporary ways that New Media artists have employed emerging technologies to expand definitions of art, and ways that New Media Art can connect humans across political borders and beyond geographical boundaries.

Emerging technologies have given humans a greater ability to make additions to visual culture than people have ever had in the past. Information and image literacy feel more important than ever in this moment that might still be described as the early stages of the Digital Age. Learning about the history of New Media Art and the ways that artists in Berlin are pushing the boundaries of art can help make our engagement in this relatively new global cultural dialogue more effective and meaningful.

Program highlights
  • Explore the city of Berlin to experience the local art, culture, and history
  • Visit exhibits and events associated with Transmediale, a year-round project in Berlin that highlights connections between art, tech, and culture
  • Visit media arts laboratories, student installations, and attend faculty guest lectures at Medienhaus (Media House) at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin)
  • Develop a report on an artist, project, tech archive, museum or site we visit in Berlin that showcases contemporary New Media artists
  • Conduct on-site research, either individually or in groups, and prepare a report which will be published in the course’s Open Educational Resource, Understanding New Media Arts, authored by the program faculty leader, Christine Weber, and other PCC Art faculty
