The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) designated July as America’s official Park and Recreation month in 1985. The goal of this month is to both encourage people to explore, enjoy and celebrate our local area parks and recreation centers, and to give recognition to the hundreds of thousand of full-time, part-time, and seasonal workers and volunteers who help maintain our country’s local, state, and community parks. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month! This year’s theme, “Build Together, Play Together, ” reminds us of the contributions of more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals — along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers — who maintain our country’s close-to-home parks.
