In PCC’s Building Inspection Technology program, we provide a diverse set of skills, enabling you to begin a career working in an essential public safety position as a building inspector or plans examiner in two years or less.
PCC offers a comprehensive Building Inspection Technology (BIT) program delivered by experts in the field. Students develop and apply basic understanding of concepts, theories, and principles of construction and codes. A broad curriculum including:
- construction materials
- building systems
- codes
- plans review
in addition to courses in:
- interpersonal communication
- computers
- mathematics,
and cooperative work experience at a local city or county building department, prepares you for a career in building inspection and/or plan review. Graduates may find employment in public and private code enforcement agencies, construction firms, engineering or architectural firms, and other related industries.
Degrees and Certificates
PCC is one of only two colleges in Oregon to offer an associate’s degree in Building Inspection Technology. We offer all courses in the evening on the Sylvania campus and a few courses are offered in an online format. There is no online only option.
- Associate of Applied Science in Building Inspection Technology
- Commercial Structural and Mechanical Inspection Certificate
- Residential Structural and Mechanical Inspection and Plans Examination Certificate

You may transfer to other colleges or universities to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Western Oregon University (WOU) accepts PCC credits toward its bachelor’s program in building policy and administration. We recommend you first check with the institution to determine transferability.
