Our grant writing series is designed to build the knowledge and practical skills needed to successfully secure grant funding for impactful projects and organizations. Taught by experienced professionals with extensive real-world expertise, these courses provide a comprehensive examination of the funding field, including proposal development, research strategies, and an understanding of grantmakers and funding priorities.
While each course may be taken individually, students are encouraged to complete the courses in the recommended sequence to deepen their learning, strengthen their competencies, and qualify for our Grant Writing Micro-Credential.
NOTE: Grant Writing 2 – Understanding Grantmakers and Grant Writing 3 – Level Up Your Proposals are designed for students with prior grant writing experience and/or who have taken Grant Writing.
Grant Writing
This introductory course guides students step by step through the grant writing process. Participants learn core concepts and develop a two-page letter of inquiry with feedback from peers and the instructor.
Grant Writing 2 – Understanding Grantmakers
Provides an inside look at the grantmaking process. Learn how to build relationships with grantmakers, understand what they look for in proposals, score grant submissions, and hear real-world insights from a local grantmaker. This is the second grant writing course in our series and geared toward participants with grant writing experience and/or who have taken our Grant Writing course.
Grant Writing 3 – Level Up Your Proposals
Receive valuable feedback on your grant proposals from peers, the instructor, and potentially a grant reviewer. Strengthen your proposal writing skills, learn best practices, and refine your draft through collaborative review and discussion. This is the third grant writing course in our series and geared toward participants with grant writing experience and/or who have taken our Grant Writing and Grant Writing 2 courses. This class helps you improve proposals through real-world review and feedback. Participants are asked to come to class with a draft proposal as a Google Doc to review and edit.
Grant Writing Micro-Credential
Complete Grant Writing, Grant Writing 2 – Understanding Grantmakers, and Grant Writing 3 – Level Up Your Proposals to qualify for a Grant Writing Micro-Credential Certificate of Completion.

Meet the instructors
Arthur Davis, MBA, GPC
Arthur has taught at Portland Community College since 2018. He is an experienced grant writer in the human services, workforce development, health, agriculture, and education sectors. Since 1998, he has been involved with Oregon nonprofits as a board member, manager, and fundraiser. Arthur’s goal is to provide a fun, interactive class where students get hands-on experience and feedback from peers and the instructor.
Rebecca Burrell, MFA/MA
Rebecca is a communications and fundraising consultant who has been working with arts nonprofits since 2000. She has helped organizations across the Portland area and beyond launch bold new brands and secure millions in funding. Rebecca is also an artist and writer, and brings a spirit of creativity, curiosity, and collaboration to her teaching and professional practice.
