We will study : Welcome Unit, Unit 2, Unit 6, and Unit 8.  We may do more…

Your responsibilities:

  • Keep all your class materials in  your  notebook.
  • Come to class on time (or early!). Class begins at 8:30 am.
  • Come to class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Schedule doctor, dentist and other appointments at other times. It is important to come to every class. If you don’t come to class, it will take longer for your English to get better.
  • Speak, read, and write English in class. Use English at work, at home, and in the stores.
  • Practice English every day!
  • Relax. It is OK to make mistakes. People learn when they make mistakes. Always try!
  • Help and cooperate with other students and the teacher. Respect each other.
  • Do all of the homework and all of the work in class. Doing your homework helps your English get stronger!

Classroom Behavior and Success in Level 2

We are creating a community of respect in this classroom.  Please treat each other and the teacher with respect.  Being respectful includes being a good listener, having an open mind, and honoring the work that we are doing together.  Being disrespectful includes coming late to class, not paying attention, using your phone for texting or social media during class, and interrupting.  Everyone should feel safe in this classroom to express themselves and to make mistakes.  Remember, you will not learn English if you do not practice.  It’s impossible to practice and really learn something without making mistakes!  Let’s read a lot, write a lot, speak a lot, listen a lot, support each other, have fun, and have a great term together…in English!

If you have problems seeing or hearing, please tell me!  Think about where you sit in the class, when you come to class, and who you sit next to in class.  Do you need to change anything?

Attendance:

Email, text, or call me if you can’t come to class:  mark.eaton1@pcc.edu 301-565-9105

If you miss a lot of class, you may not be able to go to Level 3. Most students stay in Level 2 for 3 terms.  Please don’t come to class if you feel sick.  😷

You are ready for Level 3 when you can use English to:

  • give and follow spoken directions.
  • give and follow written directions.
  • use simple past and simple present verb tenses to ask questions and make statements.
  • ask for more information.
  • recognize and understand familiar information.
  • read and understand a paragraph.
  • write basic personal information in the correct location on a form.
  • use good grammar and spelling to write a paragraph.
  • use your eagle eyes to find and correct your mistakes.
  • use the telephone to leave a message.
  • use technology.
  • spell and pronounce vocabulary words correctly.
  • identify grammar and parts of speech.
  • participate in class to communicate with the teacher and other students.
  • pass classroom quizzes and tests.

I will look at your progress based on your attendance, participation in class, homework, quiz, and test results.

ESOL Department Student Progress Policy Statement

The ESOL department has 8 levels of English (1 through 8).

  • The teacher decides the student’s level for the next term, based on the student’s progress in learning English. The student does NOT decide when to move to the next level.
  • Only students who come to class and whose English is getting better may register for the next level.

More Ways to Practice English:

  • Watch YouTube!  One channel is English with Jennifer.  There are lots of videos for practicing pronunciation, listening, reading, grammar, and more!

  • Use a good online English-English dictionary, not just Google Translate.  Many words in English have more than one meaning.  The dictionary will also help you learn parts of speech, spelling, and pronunciation.  My favorite online English-English dictionary is Longman Dictionary.

  • Use the library websites.  The PCC library has so many books and resources for students learning English.  You can also borrow a computer from the library.  The public libraries (Multnomah County, Washington County, Clark County, Clackamas County) also have many books and resources for English learners.  All libraries are free!  Also, many libraries have free printing.

  • Work with a tutor.  A tutor is a private teacher who can practice English with you one-on-one.  You can work with a PCC tutor for free!

  • Set up your PCC email account and check your email often.  You will get a lot of emails with important information about PCC.  This is a great way to practice your reading skills!

  • Read articles and do practice exercises every week on ESOL News Oregon.  You can listen to people read many of the articles.

  • Change the language settings on your phone and computer to English.  How many times a day do you look at your phone?  You have many opportunities to learn more English!
