PCC Art Faculty Mark Andres and Christopher Knight

The Rock Creek Mall becomes a huge artist's studio as PCC Art faculty Mark Andres and Christopher Knight collaborate on developing two large multiple-paneled paintings, starting from blank canvas, working from artists' models and other source materials, over the course of two days.

Joseph Mann - "Art and Photography"

 Did you know that Picasso and Matisse used photography in their painting? We have all seen how painting from photographs can turn out badly. Artist and educator Joseph Mann discusses the successful usage of photographic images in painting and drawing as well as some of the pitfalls, with examples from various modern Masters.

Artists offer a unique perspective on understanding Art History. Join noted Northwest painter Laura Ross-Paul as she discusses the symbology of Michelangelo' Sistine Chapel Ceiling as a window into the creative process and the artist's ideas of the human and the divine.

Judy Hill - Artist Talk

1pm-2pm, RC 3 Room 102

 Judy Hill's exquisite ceramic and glass sculptures of standing female figures are found in many museum and public collections throughout the world, including the Portland Art Museum. In this slide talk, Hill discusses her working process and the unique properties of her materials as they inform both object and content. Hill is represented by the Grover Thurston Gallery of Seattle, and also teaches Glass Casting at the Rock Creek campus.

Light Fingered Five - Theatre Improv

1pm-2pm, RC 3 The Forum

 The Light-Fingered Five perform theatrical game structures like those on the TV Show Whose Line Is It Anyway. The group creates comic situations, often involving audience suggestions or participation. Their motto is "No script-no problem."

Olga Sanchez - Theatre Demonstration and Workshop

11am-1pm, RC 3 The Forum

"Dialogue of the Body:" Based on the exercises of André Serban, Mary Overlie, Augusto Boal and Patrick Tucker, this physical workshop will broaden the actor's interpretive skills of text. Working with monologues and dialogues, participants explore experimental approaches to interpreting text outside of the realm of meaning or intention, and then apply these approaches to narrative interpretation and character development.

George Johanson - "Cave Paintings: An Artist's View"

1pm-2pm, RC 3 Room 102

2006's ArtBeat featured artist, painter, and printmaker George Johanson discusses his recent trip to Lascaux, France, to view some of the earliest known paintings of the human record (35,000 BCE). Johanson shows images of these works and shares his insights into what these mysterious images tell us about the nature of painting and the nature of homo sapiens as visual thinkers.

The Helzer Art Gallery hosts a juried exhibition of student work: painting, sculpture, drawing and ceramics. Join us for cupcakes and punch! Awards will be announced at 5:30.

Grupo Condor - Music Performance

Grupo Condor's music is a multi-cultural blend of European, American and African influences. From the traditional Andean favorites to their original compositions, their arrangements are lively and enticing.

Connie Kiener - Artist Talk

Northwest artist Connie Kiener discusses her work in ceramic and majolica, as well as her most recent public art commission for Portland's Contemporary Craft Museum: a 20 foot bas relief mural in ceramic and glass depicting various artists' materials and tools. Connie Kiener's work in ceramics and majolica are exhibited at Laura Russo Gallery.

Northwest Film - Film Presentation

Culling its bounty from the region, the Northwest Film and Video Festival's touring collection is a survey of the best recent works from local, independent artists. Now in its thirty-fourth year, it offers Northwest artists recognition, critical appraisal and enthusiastically engaged audiences.

 Harry Widman's creative influence as an artist and art educator has been widely felt by a generation in the Pacific Northwest. In an illustrated lecture, Widman talks about his creations-forms initially derived from nature, including the human figure, which are transformed through formal art processes into visionary images.
