Located at 2305 SE 82nd and Division, the Southeast Center is a modern, new facility that was built with bonds approved by district residents in 2000.

Monday, May 7

Ping Khaw — Hands-on Mural Project

10am-1pm, Mt. Tabor Great Hall

"To walk, to travel, to see, to learn, to inspire, to share." Watercolorist Ping Khaw leads Southeast Center students and staff in the creation of a mural for all to enjoy. Come participate and also hear Ping Khaw share her thoughts and ideas about why she creates.

Jennifer Hill — Ceramics Demonstration

1pm-3pm, Mt. Tabor Great Hall

Ceramics artist Jennifer Hill demonstrates hand-building techniques of her botanically inspired sculptural forms. Using images from a body of work entitled From Cornfield to Catwalk, Hill will show slides of sprouting onions and tendrilled teapots, then break down the process of creating the work.

  • Jennifer Hill will also be at Sylvania on Wednesday.

Betty LaDuke — Slide Lecture

10am-11am, Mt. Tabor Hall 109

Betty LaDuke shares how her recent cultural explorations in Latin America, Asia, and Africa have inspired her large acrylic paintings and etchings. Visiting Heifer International sites in such places as Rwanda, Cambodia, and Kosovo have led her to a new exhibit and theme: Dreaming Cows. Her current paintings reflect issues of hunger, sustainable environments, wars and reconciliation…and that the glass is half-full.

Grupo Condor — Music Performance

12 noon-1pm, Mt. Tabor Great Hall

Grupo Condor's music isamlti-cultural blend of European, American, and African influences. From the traditional Andean favorites to their original compositions, their arrangements are lively and enticing.

DIY Lounge — Shrine Creation

12 noon-2pm, Mt. Tabor Great Hall

A combination of traditional craft, diy-politic and craft-activist kitsch, the DIY Lounge has been the place in Portland to explore your creative side since 2005. Join DIY Lounge's founder and lead-craftista Jenn Neitzel in a veritable bacchanalia of craft in a shrine-making workshop. Build a shrine to your best friend or sweetie, deify your dog or simply celebrate yourself with these tiny, glittering boxes filled with adoration. A little tacky yet very sweet, shrines are a great way to introduce yourself to the wide, wide world of Do-It-Yourself.

Reggie Houston's Box of Chocolates — Jazz Music and Playshop

12 noon-2pm, Mt. Tabor Great Hall

Enjoy as the lively and talented Reggie Houston, Turtle Vandemarr and Tim Acott play classic jazz tunes with their own special magic, sure to make you move and smile. As an extra piece of chocolate, Reggie will intertwine words, music and visuals to trace the origins of jazz through Africa and South America to the present day.
