Rock Creek Art Department Chair Mark Andres demonstrates observational and synthetic figure painting from models in a complex environment.

Our campus literary magazine, The Rock Creek Review, hosts an open-mic reading in conjunction with the ever-popular annual student and faculty prose and poetry reading.

Betty LaDuke — Slide Lecture

11:30am-12:30pm, RC 3 The Forum

Betty LaDuke shares how her recent cultural explorations in Latin America, Asia, and Africa have inspired her large acrylic paintings and etchings. Visiting Heifer International sites in such places as Rwanda, Cambodia, and Kosovo have led her to a new exhibit and theme: Dreaming Cows. Her current paintings reflect issues of hunger, sustainable environments, wars and reconciliation…and that the glass is half-full.

Yussef El Guindi — Theater Performance

1pm-2pm, RC 3 The Forum

Arab-American playwright Yussef El Guindi lives and works in Seattle. His plays, Back of the Throat and Ten Acrobats in an Amazing Leap of Faith, have garnered awards and praise nationwide. This event will begin with a scene from Back of the Throat and be followed by a discussion between El Guindi and PCC Artistic Director Michael Najjar.

Mylan Rakich — Art Beat 2007 Featured Artist

Mylan Rakich, a large-scale metal sculptor, discusses his approach to three-dimensional compositions in mild steel and how process and mediums can dictate an outcome.

Judy Goff — Acting Demonstration

12 noon-2pm, RC 3 The Forum

Shakespeare up on your feet! A workshop that uses group exercises and techniques to explore Shakespeare's language through physicality and voice work. This workshop leads to a deeper understanding of Shakespearian text by making the language accessible and less intimidating.

M.J. Anderson — Slide Lecture and Sculpture Demonstration

1pm-2pm, RC 2 Room 111 | 2pm-4pm, Fountain Mall

M.J. Anderson, 2006 Fellowship Recipient of the Oregon Arts Individual Artist Grant, presents a lively talk and slide show on her sculpture career, from carving stone in Italy to her most recent commissions and work for exhibition. After her talk, she demonstrates the creation of sculpture in the reductive method of carving various types of stone and marble.

Kim Stafford — Literary Reading

Kim Stafford, poet, essayist, and director of the Northwest Writers Institute at Lewis and Clark College, reads, sings, and discusses what it means to be a writer, what it means to be human. Refreshments served.

Jim Koudelka — Ceramics Demonstration

10am-12 noon, RC 3 Room 125

The Vessel as Canvas: Jim Koudelka addresses the functional vessel form as a three-dimensional canvas. He demonstrates throwing, altering, and drawing on the form on and off the wheel. After this, he will show how the use of a variety of tools, techniques, and surfaces creates his layered, colorful abstract compositions for his soda fired pots.

Xevi Nova — Music Performance

12 noon-1pm, RC 3 The Forum

Xevi Nova plays Brazilian music, infusing elements of Ska, Reggae and other world influences into a diverse collection of popular and original songs. They are joined by Capoeira performers of Jogo Tempo, who explore Brazilian folklore and the art of Capoeira through music and movement.

Una Kim — Slide Lecture

Through her personal experience as an artist, Una Kim examines values in art. She shares her concerns and questions as a contemporary practicing artist living today.

Jan Underwood — Literary Reading

2pm-3pm, RC 2 Room 121

Portland novelist and PCC faculty member Jan Underwood, author of last year's prize-winning Day Shift Werewolf, returns to Art Beat to read from a novel-in-progress; Heartless is a satirical murder mystery set on a college campus. When a Latin professor turns up in pieces, the campus is rife with suspects. Was it a union-bustingamnistrator? A jealous colleague? Or a student driven to violence by the treacheries of Latin syntax?

Gallery Reception with Gentle Rain

6pm-8pm, RC 3 Gallery and Mall

View the work of the Rock Creek Art Department faculty-new paintings, photographs, sculptures, and ceramics-and the annual exhibition of Rock Creek art students' work. Awards for student work will be presented. Also enjoy the music of Gentle Rain, a Portland-based jazz ensemble, playing jazz standards including swing, bossa nova, blues, and ballads.

Michael Southern — Printmaking Demonstration

Michael Southern, noted Northwest printmaker and painter, demonstrates the art of copper plate etching and proofing, a process that has changed little since the age of Rembrandt.

Chel White — Film Presentation

11am-12:30pm, RC 9 Room 122b

Award winning Portland independent filmmaker Chel White presents and discusses some of his short films, including A Painful Glimpse into my Writing Process (In Less than 60 Seconds). According to The Austin Chronicle, White's "work seems to dispatch itself from some secret, subversive code, flashing messages amid animation, obscure stock footage, and actors with crazy eyes."

Grupo Condor — Music Performance

Grupo Condor's music isamlti-cultural blend of European, American, and African influences. From the traditional Andean favorites to their original compositions, their arrangements are lively and enticing.

Chandra Bocci — Slide Lecture

1pm-2pm, RC 2 Room 111

Chandra Bocci builds large-scale installations that explore notions of fantasy, spectacle and consumer culture. Her work includes giant rainbows constructed of Otter Pops, yellow brick roads made of mustard packets, and forest fires of celebrity hair. Her Gummi Big Bang was featured in the Portland Art Museum's 2006 Oregon Biennial. Chandra attended Pacific Northwest College of Art and has exhibited in New York, Boston, Oakland and Portland.
