IS provides the following Hardware and Software for faculty and staff in a lab housed in each of the three main campus libraries (Sylvania, Rock Creek, and Cascade) and in the Faculty Room of Southeast Center. There are also student multimedia labs available at Sylvania and Rock Creek. IS also has digital cameras, digital video cameras and laptops for checkout by faculty, staff and students.

Locations

There are four Faculty Production Labs:

  • Sylvania LIB 110: 4 PCs and 1 Mac
  • Rock Creek Library 206: 3 PCs and 1 Mac
  • Cascade LIB 121: 3 PC and 1 Mac
  • SE Center Mount Tabor Faculty Room: 2 PC and 1 Mac

There are two Student Production Labs:

  • Sylvania Library: 3 PCs
  • Rock Creek Library: 1 PC

Hardware

Internet-connected Windows and Mac computers, b/w and color laser printers, flatbed and slide-film scanners, DVD/DVD±RW drives, firewire card and more. Here is a detailed list of the hardware in the Faculty Labs:

  • Slide Scanner: scans 35mm slides and negatives into a digital format
  • Flatbed Scanner: scans printed images into digital form.  It looks at the image pixel by pixel and records what it sees. Different scanners record different amounts of information about each pixel.
  • Black/White and Color Laser Printer: a fast, high quality, efficient laser printer, which can do duplex (one that prints on both sides of the paper).
  • CD/DVD Burner: burn and share anything on CD - your data files, create powerful slide shows and video presentations to enhance your classroom participation.
  • Flash card reader: transfer data between computer and digital camera, MP3 player, PDA, or any other portable device, which uses CompactFlash Type I and II, IBM Microdrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, MagicGate Memory Stick, MultiMedia Card, XD Card, and Secure Digital.
  • 4 USB connectors: 2 on the left-side of monitor and 2 on the front of the computer.
  • Firewire connectors: located at the back of the computer, 1 firewire 400, 2 firewire 800.

    • FileZilla: FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.
    • WS-FTP: The most popular way to transfer your personal computer files over the Internet: Upload HTML pages or documents to your Web site.
  • Multimedia Software/ Players
    • DivX Codec/Player: also known as DivX media format (DMF), is an MPEG-4 video stream to support DVD-Video and VOB files.
    • Flash Player: Over 414 million Web users can now use Macromedia Flash Player to seamlessly view content created with Macromedia Flash, the professional standard for producing high-impact, vector-based Web experiences. The default file format is swf.
    • iTunes: a free digital media player application by Apple for playing and organizing digital music and video files on your computer. It works with iPod player and iPhone, can connect to iTunes Store to download purchased music, videos, TV shows, iPod games, audiobooks, etc. The default file format is mp3.
    • QuickTime: a media play back of high-quality audio and video, commonly used by Macintosh. Turn your display into a theater and enjoy the full cinematic experience. The default file format is mov.
    • Real Player: currently names RealOne. A cross-platform media player that plays multimedia formats, such as mp3, mpeg4, QuickTime, Windows Media and Real media files. The default format is: RealAudio (.ra, .rm), RealVideo (.rv, .rm, .rmvb), RealPix (*.rp), RealText (*.rt), RealMedia Shortcut (.ram, .rmm)
    • VLC Player: is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
    • Windows Media Player 11.0: a digital media player and media library application to play audio, video in Windows. The default file format is wmv (video) and wma (audio).
  • PDF (Portable Document Format) Converter
    • Acrobat Professional 8.0: lets you convert any document to an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file. Anyone can open your document across a broad range of hardware and software, and it will look exactly as you intended — with layout, fonts, links, and images intact using Acrobat Reader (free).
    • PrimoPDF: lets you convert any document to an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file. Use Acrobat Reader to open the PDF file.
  • Quiz & Activity Development Software
    • Respondus: a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard.
    • Study Mate: an authoring tool that lets you create 10 Flash-based activities and games using four simple templates. The Flash activities are usable with any web server or can be published directly to Blackboard.

  • Sound Editing Software
    • Audacity: free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and other operating systems.
    • Sony Sound Forge: digital audio editing software includes a powerful set of audio processes, tools, and effects for manipulating audio. Sound Forge software allows you to edit, record, encode, and master nearly any form of digital audio including WAV, AIFF, and MP3.
    • GarageBand (Mac): Create and record music, make podcasts, and play with your own virtual band, part of iLife ’08 package.
  • Video Production/Conversion Software
    • Camtasia 5.0: a screen capturing program that lets you easily create compelling training and presentations for Web and CD-ROM delivery.  It is the only product versatile enough to record live PowerPoint presentations, personalized technical training sessions, and software demonstrations.
    • Windows Movie Maker: is a video creating/editing program bundled with Windows. You can add effects, transitions, titles/credits, audio track, and timeline narration to the existing video.
    • iMovie (Mac): is a video creating/editing program. You can add effects, transitions, titles/credits, audio track, and timeline narration to the existing video, part of iLife ’08 package.
    • QuickTime Pro (Mac): a media play back of high-quality audio and video, commonly used by Macintosh. Turn your display into a theater and enjoy the full cinematic experience. The default file format is mov. The Pro version is used to convert movie into mov format.
  • Web page Development Software
    • Contribute CS3: allows a wide variety of people within an organization to update web pages by reducing the amount of web design skills necessary for the process. The administrator has a full control of the style, code, and permissions for users.
    • Dreamweaver CS3: is a web development program with WYSIWYG tools, allows users to connect to databases to filter and display content using scripting technologies.
    • Flash CS3: multimedia authoring program to create content for web applications, games, and movies. The Flash Player (free) required having to view flash files (swf).
    • iWeb (Mac): Quickly create a stunning website, complete with photos, movies, and live web widgets, part of iLife ’08 package.
    • Kompozer: a free WYSIWYG web authoring program (for HTML, XHTML, and CSS), derived from SeaMonkey Composer.
  • Other Software
    • IHMC CMap Tools: a free concept mapping program to describe a timeline or process and collaborate with others.
    • KBox: Systems Management Software to complete computer inventory, distribute software, perform patch management, run compliance reports, enforce security settings, deploy new operating systems and more.
    • Sophos: PCC official anti-virus software.
    • Zip Central: free and easy to use zip file manager with all the utilities you need to manage your zip file.
