       REGULAR simple past: Spelling Rules

       Rule #1

       If a verb ends in -e, add -d.

       • like → liked
       • arrive → arrived
       • decide → decided

       Rule #2

       If a verb ends in consonant + -y, change -y to -i and add -ed.

       • carry → carried
       • try → tried
       • study → studied

       Rule #3

       If a verb ends in vowel + -y, add -ed.*

       • play → played
       • stay → stayed
       • enjoy → enjoyed

       Rule #4

       If a verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant and add -ed.**

       • hug → hugged
       • plan → planned
       • stop → stopped

       Rule #5

       For all other verbs, add -ed.

       • watch → watched
       • ask → asked
       • clean → cleaned

       Notes

       *Note 1:

       There are some exceptions to Rule #3:

       • pay → paid
       • lay → laid

       **Note 2:

       Rule #4 is true only for verbs that have the stress on the final syllable. Notice the difference below:

       Syllable stress (louder, longer syllable)

       • prefer → preferred

       visit → visited

   • Please write 10-12 sentences (or more!)
   • Include a title and indent the first line
   • Use a mix of regular & irregular past tense
   • Use affirmative & negative sentences

My Trip to India

My husband is from India, but my first trip there was in 2018. My flight went through Singapore, and I spent one night there. It was very hot and humid, but the airport was so interesting! My husband and mother-in-law met me at the airport. I was so nervous because I was travelling alone, but everything was OK. I was so happy to see them, and we went to the hotel. It was so beautiful, and the breakfast buffet was amazing. I ate so much! The next day we explored the city. We went to a zoo and a historical coffee shop. The day after that, we took a train to my mother-in-law’s city. We spent a month there. I met so many family members! We stayed in her apartment. It was very very hot. Only one room was air-conditioned, and I was in there all the time. We visited many beautiful temples. We traveled to a hill station that was green and cool. We hiked there and saw many monkeys. We went to an old French colony called Pondicherry. We ate at a French restaurant. We went to a historic city with many old stone sculptures next to the ocean. We swam in the ocean; it was warm! We went to many delicious restaurants, and I enjoyed the cooking of many family members. I wore Indian clothes. I didn’t understand the language very much, but some people spoke English. People were very friendly.
