Nature and Scope of Work

The Student Leadership Coordinator is responsible for the development of leadership and campus involvement among the students at an assigned campus. The Coordinator provides administrative oversight to a variety of programs and clubs and acts as a liaison to staff overseeing other student clubs. The Coordinator represents student needs and issues on college committees and assists students in the grievance process when appropriate. Supervises student help and provides training in leadership areas. Acts as advisor to Phi Theta Kappa. The Coordinator plans and organizes special ceremonies, service projects, and some club functions. Incumbents in this position may oversee intramural sports and schedule the gym.

Principal Accountabilities (includes some or all of the following)

  1. Coordinates and oversees the student government and its leaders. Advises leaders on methods and processes. Assists in problem solving a variety of issues. Teaches students program planning and mentors them throughout the academic year. Serves as supervisor to students seeking credit for their experiences on campus.
  2. Works with the PCC Foundation in the promotion and selection of scholarship recipients. Acts as liaison between faculty and award winners. Makes arrangements for student attendance at award luncheons. Coordinates the Service Learning program. Works with businesses within the community in developing learning sites; places students. Conducts business site visits.
  3. Coordinates fundraising activities for student government. Oversees assigned budget and payroll processing. Processes personnel paperwork for assigned employees.
  4. Identifies appropriate conferences for student leaders to attend. Makes travel arrangements. Travels with students to leadership development conferences and meetings, serving as advisor and college representative. Mediates situations as needed.
  5. Develops and administers policies and procedures relating to travel, accessing funds, distribution of money to clubs, free speech, etc. Facilitates policy development annually with new student government leaders. Produces student handbook, brochures and written information.
  6. Coordinates district-wide activities and programs with other Student Leadership Coordinators. Develops promotional materials and advertising of events. Provides event oversight.
  7. Participates in New Student Success seminars and orientation. Provides general overview to students on testing, how to register, and how to survive in a college environment. Assists in providing academic advising during peak registration times.
  8. Directs student, work study, casual, volunteer, and classified staff. Hires and trains student workers to carry out programs and activities to promote learning and student development. Participates in performance evaluations and corrective action with student leaders and staff.
  9. May coordinate intramural and intercollegiate athletic activities for assigned campus. Works cooperatively with Plant Services staff and facility scheduling. Hires and trains student workers to plan and develop a program that meets the interests of the diverse student population.
  10. Designs and implements leadership development programs to assist students in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform leadership functions. This may include teaching the Phi Theta Kappa course on “Leadership through the Classics.”
  11. Coordinates campus Diversity Committee to plan, promote and implement multicultural events. Oversees the expenditure of funds allocated by the Diversity Committee for multicultural programs.
  12. May administer emergency loans including the distribution of funds, eligibility requirements and budget management.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed in various settings, both on campus and off campus. The position requires flexible work hours including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Frequent travel with student leaders is required.

Physical Requirements

Lifting, bending, and pulling equipment is required in the process of setting up or taking down equipment used for special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Student Development, Counseling, or related field. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Demonstrated experience in conducting student leadership training programs, program planning and development, and needs assessment in a college environment required. Experience facilitating, mediating, and problem solving in a group environment. Experience coordinating intramural and/or athletic activities desirable.
