Job Summary

Develops, promotes and manages all aspects of a multi-campus international education program. This position is responsible for setting the international tone within the college as a whole in regard to the value and accessibility of international education for both domestic and international students.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Direct the college-wide services and programs for international students. Develop and direct the “study abroad” efforts of the College, including recruitment, site development and appropriateness of curriculum.
  2. Manage the program budget including developing budget proposals, justifying expenses, and monitoring expenditures.
  3. Supervise professional and classified employees.  Hire, evaluate, and train personnel.  Provide the overall direction for the work of the staff.
  4. Monitor international students’ compliance with INS regulations, determining appropriate action or intervention to be taken when necessary. Serve as liaison to U.S. and foreign government agencies to ensure that legal responsibilities re: immigration, employment, taxation, public assistance, etc. are met and that the students are appropriately advised on the above matters.
  5. Supervise the advising of international students on personal, immigration, academic and financial matters.
  6. Develop, negotiate and maintain all short-term or special international programs and contracts, including student and faculty exchanges.
  7. Develop, coordinate and supervise special services for international students.
  8. Coordinate all international student recruitment and marketing efforts. Coordinate the international student admissions process, including assisting with the evaluation of incoming students’ international credentials for the College.
  9. Coordinate an array of special projects focusing on internationalizing the campus and curriculum to meet established educational plan initiatives.
  10. Serve as a resource person and advocate for international students and international education on campus-wide committees.
  11. Work collaboratively with Deans of Instruction and Deans of Student Development to provide appropriate instruction and guidance for students.
  12. Participate actively and represent the College in local, regional and national professional organizations related to international education.

Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field such as an academic discipline, community college administration or student development. Two years of demonstrated experience working with multiple aspects of international programs in a leadership capacity. Recent experience in higher education, preferably in a community college setting.

Knowledge of:

Policies and procedures in regard to international students of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and other relevant governmental agencies; social and psychological processes of adjusting to another culture; and word processing and basic computer skills (specifically MS Word, Access and Excel).

Ability to:

Develop and maintain working relationships; effectively communicate verbally and in writing; contribute to the College’s diversity plan and foster a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation; and be cultural sensitivity and diplomacy and work with students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in an indoor office environment. Travel by automobile is required to attend meetings at other PCC locations. Travel by air several times per year for conferences, recruiting trips and to establish connections in other countries. The Director’s work schedule may be impacted by the needs of customers. Generally good working conditions with little or no exposure to safety or health hazards. Minimal physical exertion is required. Most job time spent sitting with occasional walking and standing.
