Supply List

This list is a suggestion only. You do not need to purchase everything on it. We will discuss supplies on the first day of class. Paint and canvas are the most costly items on this list. You can get started with only a few inexpensive brushes. Supplies should cost between $60-100 depending on brand and store. PCC school stores, I’ve Been Framed Art Supply, Blick and Artist & Craftsman Supply are good places to go for supplies.

Acrylic Paint

Please buy the following acrylic paint colors in Utrecht brand, Liqutex, Blick, Academy or Golden brands. *Blick, Liqutex and Academy brands should be the most economical. Be sure to note the word HUE after the Cadmium colors. Pure cadmium is a heavy metal which we do not want in the studio. The word HUE means that the color is basically the same, minus the heavy metals.

Additional tip: it is tempting to purchase the “see through” tubes of paint as they are the cheapest, Blick and Liquitex sell these. However, the quality is not satisfactory. Try to stay away from purchasing these if you can.

  • Cadmium Red Medium Hue
  • Alizarin or Quinacridone Red
  • Cerulean Blue Hue /Phthalo
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium orange Hue
  • Cadmium Yellow Hue
  • Titanium White (large tube or 2 smaller tubes, we will use a lot)
  • Black (Bone, Carbon, Mars…)

Brushes & Knives:

Have an assortment of synthetic nylon and hogs hair brushes that appeal to you (Rounds, Brights, Flats, Filberts). A pack of brushes could be a good buy. Don’t spend more than $5 per brush. At minimum you will need:

  • 2-3 bright or flat brushes: ¼” – 1” wide
  • 1 (or more) round brushes: detail small to medium and 1 fan brush
  • 1 house painting brush (approx. 1” – 2” wide, flat)
  • 1 metal or plastic paint mixing knife, the white plastic one works fine.

Palette to mix paint on:

Acrylic is a heavy body paint and we mix it with a paint knife on a flat surface. You will need a flat palette for this class.

  • A disposable paper palette pad, 12×16” or 9×12” works well.

Substrates:

  • 6 Pre stretched canvases or panels (the size is up to you, but I’d probably choose 12” x 16”)
  • 14×17” Bristol pad or heavy sketch paper

Additional supplies:

  • Jars for brushes, mixing paint and water
  • rags
  • graphite pencils
  • puffy paint, markers, alternative media encouraged.
  • Spray Bottle
