Hybrid MTH 95 Class Information:

This class is called a “hybrid,” which refers to the combination of face-to-face (F2F) class meetings and online work. In this hybrid class you are going to learn everything that you would learn in a face-to-face class, but there will be a lot more of an emphasis on you (the student) having the discipline and perseverance to push through difficulties in learning the material each week. The main thing to know is that you are expected to learn the material independently, outside of class, by watching video lectures and completing the Lecture Outlines before each class meeting in order to be prepared for the in-class portion.  During our once-a-week F2F class, I will answer your questions and we will work on activities and in-class assignments that pertain to the concepts you have learned.

Some important things to keep in mind as you consider whether a Hybrid course is right for you:

  • Attendance is crucial. As we only meet once-a-week, you are expected to come to every class – there will be assignments and quizzes due every F2F class that cannot be submitted late – any missed class assignment will result in earning a zero for that assignment.
  • You should expect to spend between 10-15 hours a week on our course and these are best done in small chunks throughout the week.  Plan to study for our class at least 3 times a week in addition to class time.  In a traditional, face-to-face class you can sit passively and obtain information by the exchange between teacher and student. That component is minimized in this class format and you will need to spend extra time outside of class to first learn the material and then practice what you have learned.
  • An online or hybrid learning environment is may be more difficult than a F2F course. You have to be very disciplined and make sure you have a set schedule of when you will study. If you have a hard time motivating yourself to study, then an online learning environment is not for you.
  • You should begin the before class assignments the first day of availability.  If you tend to wait for deadlines to complete your work, this learning format might not be the best fit for you. It will be impossible for your brain to learn and retain the information if you try to do it all in one sitting or just the day before class.
  • You will need a high-speed connection from home and you need to be comfortable with technology and able to learn quickly if not familiar with a piece of software.
  • If you are not sure if an online learning environment is a good fit for you, PCC Distance Learning has a quick assessment to help you decide.  Check out the Start Guide at http://www.pcc.edu/about/distance/students/osg/.  If this were a 100% online class, you would be required to take this assessment before enrolling.  Even though our class is only 40% or so online, it can help you understand what is expected from you and resources that can help you be successful.

This class uses a free textbook (ORCCA) and homewok is completed online using WeBWorK. (More information on both will be provided at our first F2F class meeting.)

Online MTH 70 CLass Information:

This is a fast-paced course as it is a review of introductory algebra. The class will be open and available for you starting the Friday before the start of the term, however you are not expected to begin work until Day 1. Once class begins you will need to get started – your first assignment is due Tuesday of Week 1. The course is taught via videos and written lectures, one module per week. There are additional learning opportunities available through MyMathLab, such as PowerPoint Presentations and interactive practice exercises. Students are graded on weekly homework and weekly quizzes (completed in MyMathLab), as well as weekly discussion questions, two write-ups, a midterm, and a final exam.

This class uses  Intermediate Algebra for College Students (with MyMathLab) by Robert Blitzer, 7th edition. You can either purchase a NEW textbook at the PCC bookstore which comes bundled with MyMathLab or purchase MyMathLab which includes the eBook. To purchase just MyMathLab, go to MyMathLab or the student book sale or even try outside vendors for discounted pricing. If you will not have MyMathLab immediately, you can take advantage of the free 14-day trial.
