Welcome!!  I am so happy you are here!!

Xiana Sequoia Biology 101

A LITTLE ABOUT ME!

My name is Xiana Santos-Smithhart! I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for 10 years and the Portland/Vancouver area for the last 2.5 years.  I come from a family of Natural Resource Enthusiasts and Educators and thoroughly enjoy our natural resources. I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology and Marine Biology with a Minor in Natural Resources,  Master of Science in Environmental Conservation Science with emphasis in Geographic Information Systems from North Dakota State University and a doctoral degree in Forest Resources from Mississippi State University College of Forest Resources with emphasis in Natural Resource Economics (Go Bulldogs!).   I am so thrilled to be teaching you about my area of expertise and see you blossom like I did when I was first exposed to Biology.  Natural Resources is my passion and I want to break down the barriers that Science subjects have had on students. Science subjects are by nature, challenging, but together we can conquer!

COVID-19 Note:

I am teaching BIO-101 and Bio 145 remote.  I plan on having all my lectures pre-recorded for you to access at your convenience and plan on meeting once a week (not mandatory–at a time the class decides) to guide you through labs and/or answer any questions).

Your Success Matters to Me

Your success matters a lot to me.  Biology is considered a challenging subject but I want to help you learn and apply good study techniques, become a critical thinker and to use my class as a platform to build on your future Biology classes or Science career.  I want you to always know that you are capable and that you will succeed if you do your part and work hard in my class. Biology requires commitment, time, dedication, and practice.

Being Informed

I would encourage you to check your MyPCC email and d2l as we near the start of class.  I plan on uploading all material on d2l prior to the course start date with zoom invitations, videos, home-works, syllabus, readings, and everything else that makes Biology 101 exciting!! I am looking forward to meeting you all!
