I am glad to be a part-time anatomy and physiology instructor at PCC, where in fall 2026 I will be teaching BI231z Human Anatomy & Physiology 1. Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 (A&P1) is an introduction to human anatomy and physiology. I find studying anatomy and physiology fascinating and exciting – and I hope you will too.
This course examines the structure and function of the human body through a body systems approach. Explores anatomy and physiology of the integumentary, skeletal and muscular systems at the relevant levels of biological organization (chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, and organ system). Covers neurophysiology and excitable membranes. Includes foundational aspects such as anatomical terminology and homeostasis.
Schedule and instructors: Most weeks students should expect that we will have two in-person lecture class meetings (with instructor Stacey Wainwright) and one in-person lab class meeting (with instructor Ksenia Everton):
○ Lecture – Mondays and Wednesdays 11am – 12:20pm in PAC 101 (Performing Arts Center building, room 101)
○ Lab – Mondays 1-3:50pm in ST 203 (Science and Technology building, room 203)
Textbooks/Resources: Reading about our course content is an essential part of our course, and I strongly recommend that students use at least one reference text (print/physical or web-based) to support their study in lecture and in lab. However, there is no required textbook for lecture or lab, and the following are optional resources to consider.
- Print/physical A&P Texts/Books – NOT required, optional. Can look for these or similar texts/books at the library, borrow from former students, or find older versions for sale to get much of the same content at a sharp discount. I will bring copies to the first class meeting for students to review.

- A Visual Analogy Guide to Human Anatomy and Physiology by Paul A. Krieger. Lacks detail compared to other texts and does not include all topics, but includes many enjoyable and helpful memory aids and can be colored/interactive.

- OpenStax Anatomy & Physiology 2e by J. Gordon Betts, Peter Desaix, Edward W. Johnson, Jody E. Johnson, Oksana Korol, Dean Kruse, Brandon Poe, James Wise, Mark D. Womble, and Kelly A. Young – an online open education resource which may lack some of the detail of some print textbooks, but is likely to be helpful
- Khan Academy – Human Anatomy and Physiology – engaging videos, text, and quizzes
- Crash Course – Anatomy & Physiology – videos are entertaining, relatively high quality, great for topic introductions
- GetBodySmart – Interactive Anatomy & Physiology – not in-depth for physiology, but nice diagrams for both anatomy and physiology with some helpful quizzes
Gearing up for the term. I will open our D2L page and post a class syllabus with more class information before we first meet, but students might consider the following before the start of the term:
- Develop a study strategy for the term, with time to preview and review material for each class session.
- Learn about evidence-based learning strategies so you can study smarter, not harder/longer to achieve your goals. Six Strategies for Effective Learning
- Plan to implement The Study Cycle to help prepare for and review after class meetings and schedule time accordingly.
- Aim to work towards content mastery, not just familiarity, to succeed in A&P. This will take time. A&P courses cover a lot of material and it can be tempting to feel satisfied once familiar with the material. In my experience, students who are only familiar with the material as a result of passive activities like re-reading text material, are much less likely to be successful. Using effective learning strategies can help students achieve mastery of class content. Check out this video from Dr. Elizabeth Co describing pathways to A&P content mastery. Plan to spend at least 12 hours a week outside class on your studies. Please note that students may require more time to master topics they find particularly challenging.
- Review topics from prerequisite courses before the term begins. For an idea about what topics to include in your review, consider the following:
- Chemistry (for example, ions and pH)
- Cells/Cell function
- ATP production
- Cell membrane transport
- Cell signaling
- Cell cycle
- How to find review-topic information? Try a physical or online A&P textbook (like OpenStax Anatomy & Physiology 2e)! Often A&P texts will include (after an introduction) a set of chemistry and cell/cell function topics from prerequisite courses that could be helpful to review before beginning A&P1, as this information will serve as the foundation for A&P1, A&P2, and A&P3 discussions.
- Begin to become familiar with the language of anatomy, physiology, and medicine. Learning Anatomy and Physiology involves learning many new terms – almost like learning a new language. Familiarity with Greek and Latin word parts can help students better understand these terms.
