My full-time career started in 1973, and just recently found out that from the beginning of PCC, I am one of 4 teaching faculty members (basically of all PCC employees) still working from that date in time!

Along with teaching, full-time, I was the first female coach at Sylvania campus, working with several sports for a few years, and was also a weekend warrior in the US Army Reserve.  After completion of my Doctor of Education degree, in 1983, Rock Creek became home campus.  During that time, and after spending nearly 10 years in the Reserves, reaching the rank of Captain/promotable, in 1986, I was forced to resign my commission for being gay.  After the military’s horrible treatment, and the forced resignation, I became focused on writing a well-received and awarded book, My Country, My Right To Serve, the first oral history about gays and lesbians in the military.

Officially retiring from full-time in December of 2002–after 30 years–I simply continued on as a part-time instructor.  During that time, the beautiful sports facility now on the RC campus, was a result of an original plan I submitted to the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Planning Department.

Since 1985, I have been in a wonderful relationship–now legally married by our personal friend, Governor Roberts–to my wife, Debra.  Together, we raised two great boys, and happily, I am now a grandmother-twice!  I still collect Mickey Mouse, spend time at our beach house, love to travel in our RV, and spend many hours with friends, family, and our very senior Bichon-Poodle mix, a Schnauzer-Terrier mix, and a Pharaoh Hound mix.

In June of 2012, Portland’s Q Center, honored me as a member of the first class “Queer Heroes” for political, military and community involvement for gay rights.  As a founding member of Veterans for Human rights, while in uniform, over the past 30+ years, proudly start each Portland Pride Parade, carrying the US Flag for our Color Guard.  In June of 2018, PCC’s Queer Resource Centers awarded me the Gender Justice Legacy Award and was also awarded my 45-year pin for continuous employment with the College.

Discussion of the Hybrid/D2L-Brightspace classes:

The Self Paced Fitness, (PE 182Q) listed below was an original, first in the nation, creation of mine, whereby one could complete fitness activities outside the confines of the College walls. This led the way for other Hybrid-online/on your own fitness classes, including Adult Fitness, (PE 182H).  The course offers the student an opportunity to choose the fitness routine, time, schedule and work out in any chosen space, eliminating the necessity of coming to campus.  Each course requires documented activity of at least 30 hours per term, which is the same number needed for any one-credit class.

Unless a course is listed as totally D2l-Brightspace, some may require a one-time,

on-campus orientation where the student must come to campus.
