Julianne Sandlin, PhD

Hello! I’m Julianne Sandlin, or Dr. J as students often call me, and I’m excited to have you as a student in my class!

Teaching Art History

I’ve been teaching college-level art history courses since the early 2000s, joining  PCC as full-time faculty  in 2011.

I was first introduced to art history as an elective while getting a degree in Interior Design at Appalachian State University. I immediately loved learning art history, but it was only after some dead-end jobs that I decided to go back to school to study it. I ended up getting a PhD in art and architectural history from Florida State University in 2009, and I moved to Portland in 2011 for this job.

I teach a variety of classes at PCC, including online, remote, and face-to-face (usually at the Sylvania campus).  Courses I currently teach include Understanding Architecture (ART 101), the History of Western Art sequence (ART 204, 205, and 206), History of American Residential Architecture (ART 215), and History of Chinese Art (ART 208).

About Me

I grew up in North Carolina and moved around to several other southern states while getting my degrees. However, after living my whole life in the southeast, I was really excited to get the chance to move across the country to Portland! Living in Oregon has been great! My family and I really enjoy getting out and enjoying the natural beauty of the state through camping, hiking, and kayaking (maybe even looking for that random Bigfoot encounter!). Plus I don’t miss the bugs, snakes, and humidity of Florida!

When I’m not teaching, I love going for walks, swimming, and reading fiction novels (some of my all-time favorites include One Hundred Years of Solitude, His Dark Materials trilogy, and Pride and Prejudice). In the fall, my husband I really enjoy watching college football (go App State!). I also watch a lot of soccer, both professional and my son’s rec league! My other major interest is traveling.

I also have two cats, Bertie and Max (see them below). They are both likely to show up in remote classes!
