
Hello! I’m Autumn Pham. You are welcome to call me Autumn, Ms. Pham, or Dr. Pham—whichever you feel most comfortable with. I’m excited to have the opportunity to learn alongside you this term.
I studied mathematics at UC Berkeley and CSU Long Beach before earning my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Portland State University. My teaching focuses on helping students build conceptual understanding, develop confidence in mathematics, and see mathematics as a meaningful way to make sense of the world. Whether you’re preparing to become an elementary teacher or taking mathematics as part of your academic journey, I hope my courses help you grow as both a learner and a problem solver.
I recognize that students bring a wide range of mathematical experiences, strengths, and goals to the classroom. My aim is to create a learning environment where everyone feels valued, challenged, and supported as they develop their mathematical understanding.
I believe mathematics is something we make sense of—not something we simply memorize. In my classes, you’ll engage in problem solving, mathematical discussions, hands-on activities, the use of manipulatives, and collaborative learning. I encourage students to ask questions, explain their thinking, explore multiple solution strategies, and learn from one another. Mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning and often lead to our greatest insights.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in social constructivism, the idea that knowledge is co-constructed through meaningful interactions with others. I believe learning mathematics is an active process that flourishes through participation, discussion, and collaboration. Whether the course is in person or online, your engagement with your classmates and the mathematical ideas we explore together is an essential part of the learning experience. To support both your learning and the learning of our classroom community, regular attendance and active participation are expected in all of my courses.
My goal is to create a classroom where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and supported. I value curiosity, perseverance, collaboration, and productive struggle, and I believe every student is capable of developing deep mathematical understanding with the right opportunities and support.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy continuing to learn about mathematics education and exploring new ways to create engaging, equitable, and meaningful learning experiences for students. In my free time, I also enjoy cooking and exploring new cuisines by trying different restaurants and foods.
