Focuses on developing flexible strategies for reading and writing, and producing clear and coherent paragraphs and essays. Emphasizes strategies for comprehension and metacognition, critical reading and thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, vocabulary development, and writing conventions. You will need the basics for an online course -- a computer or tablet with Internet access, and a word processing program for composing your own writing.

No additional technology requirements beyond that. If you can access the course website in D2L, and if you can access your PCC email, then you have the technology necessary to complete this class.

If you prefer to use Microsoft Word to write documents, then you will need to have your own copy of that program. But you could also use Google Docs, which is available to everyone through the PCC Google suite. You also have the option of making audio or video recordings for your work in IRW 115, instead of writing them. Ultimately, you will need to use a computer application for doing the coursework in IRW 115, but you can choose which application you use and which kind of media you prefer to work in.

Greetings! Thanks for your interest in my IRW class this spring!

This "remote" class will be taught online. Class will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1-2 p.m. in zoom. The purpose of the weekly zoom meetings is to discuss the course materials for that week and to address questions in real time. Students are strongly encouraged to attend class zooms, but attendance will not be required in order to receive a certain grade. Class zoom sessions will be recorded so that students who have other commitments on Friday mornings will be able to view the videos on their own time.

In addition to the weekly class zoom meeting, you will be expected to complete the coursework on your own schedule and time -- there will be a weekly schedule of work to do, and it will be your responsibility to complete the work from week to week. All of the class assignments will be posted in the course D2L website when the site opens on Monday, March 29.

Students will have a couple individual conferences with me (either video or phone, your choice) to discuss your work. You'll also be expected to attend some individual remote tutoring sessions with the PCC Reading & Writing Center (RWC), and these sessions will be held through google meet. The goals of these real-time conversations are to support you individually as a reader and writer, to help you achieve the goal of passing this class and moving onto the next level, and to familiarize you with the RWC because it's a great resource to use throughout your studies at PCC.

Please note that our IRW 90 class will be combined with my IRW 115 class this spring.

As a student in IRW 90, you are not required to complete all of the same assignments as the students in IRW 115 — more specifically, there is an extensive research project for the 115 students that you, as a 90 student, are not required to complete. If you do all the assignments for IRW 90, you will pass the class and go onto IRW 115 in summer or fall. However, as a 90 student in this class, you will also have the option to complete the coursework for IRW 115, including the research project. If you choose to complete the 115 research project, then you will can accelerate into and register for WR 121 in summer or fall, and you will also receive “placement into WR 121” and thus be able to register for General Education classes at PCC.

The assignments for IRW 115 include:

  • Weekly Reading & Viewing materials
  • Brief weekly Surveys
  • Some online Discussions
  • A Narrative Essay — where you tell a story about words that mattered to you
  • A Midterm Reading Assessment — which involves an inventory of reading & writing practices, a Summary-Response assignment, and a Self-Assessment
  • An Inquiry & Research Project — which involves you conducting an individual research project on a topic of personal interest, and which you’ll work on over the course of several weeks

All of the course readings and viewings will be freely available inside our class website — except for two things. The first of these is a film, The Social Dilemma, which is available through Netflix. If you do not have Netflix access, just let me know, and we’ll figure it out.

The other text which is not freely available in our course website is a book of your own choice. Everyone in IRW 115 is expected to read a book-length work in this class. However, rather than assign the same book to everyone, each individual student will select a book of your own choice to read. Chances are that you will want to read a book which is related to your research project, but you could also choose a book which is not directly related to your project and which you’ve been wanting a reason to read.
