Covers the modification and customization of existing WordPress themes using child themes. Includes using a responsive HTML5/CSS3 framework to create new, unique themes. Explores editing and updating the Theme Customizer and other dashboard enhancements. Introduces the creation of menu capability, page templates, widgets, sidebars and other widget areas. Covers WordPress PHP functions and hooks. Includes e-commerce, translation, and SEO concepts. Includes creating basic plugins, security and techniques for backing up and moving WordPress sites. Recommended: CAS 111W, CAS 206, and CAS 213 or a working knowledge of WordPress, HTML5, CSS3 and basic JavaScript or PHP programming concepts and placement into RD 115 and WR 115. There is no textbook for this course. Detailed written instructions and instructional videos are used for all assignments. Videos require students to have speakers/headphones connected to their computer.

Required WEB HOSTING

Students will be expected to have an active account at Web Hosting for Students (WH4S) for this class or cPanel type hosting server. You can use either a PC or a Mac for this class. Your instructor has both a PC and a Mac.

WordPress is free open-source software and does not require software purchase or download.

CHECK-IN REQUIREMENTS: Students must check in to the course (by completing the Wizard on the class home page) by Wednesday night of the first week of class or they may be dropped from the class.
