MATHEMATICS AND DISTANCE LEARNING
Congratulations on enrolling in MTH 30 Business Mathematics. I can only wish you the best as you learn about useful topics such as simple and compound interest, taxes, financial statements, and more! .

However, learning mathematics over the internet is not easy. This is not meant as discouragement but rather a 'reality check.' You will spend a considerable amount of time reading the online modules and sections of your textbook, and contributing to other course requirements. Ensure your weekly schedule has room for at least four hours for reading and an additional 4 - 8 hours per week working on assigned problems and contributing to the course. Please take this seriously; it does holds true for most online math courses. Often you may significantly enhance your computer and study skills by taking an online course!

To succeed in an online course you need to be an independent, self-motivated learner, be proactive with seeking additional resources when stuck (e.g., tutors, contact the instructor, etc.), have excellent time management skills, and be pretty comfortable with computers and programs.

Consider your level of preparation with the prerequisite material (MTH 20 Basic Math), and the amount of time you have to devote to this course each week. Additionally, if it has been more than one calendar year since you successfully completed a math course, please review the PCC Math Department's Preliminary Placement Guidelines.

ABOUT MTH 30
Prerequisites: MTH 20 and (RD 80 or ESOL 250).

The course will begin reviewing basic material from MTH 20 (Whole Numbers and Decimals, Fractions, Percents, and Equations and Formulas) with an emphasis on application business problems. New material will include banking services, simple and compound interest, payroll, taxes and insurance, business and consumer loans, annuities, the mathematics of buying and selling, depreciation, financial statements and ratios, and ending with an introduction to business statistics.

COURSE ORGANIZATION
A new module will be released about once a week. Each module will consist of a new reading assignment and practice problems from the textbook. MyMathLab provides additional resources for viewing topic-related videos, additional practice, and where your weekly quizzes are completed. You will also contribute weekly to discussion postings to enhance and share your understanding of the topics. Before each exam, an assignment is provided for which your work will be completed using Microsoft Word or Open/Libre Office. Due dates and a schedule will be provided so that you may plan accordingly.

ON-CAMPUS EXAMS
There will be two on-campus exams, one of which must be the final exam. Each exam will be administered at the Rock Creek campus (Room TBA) and are tentatively scheduled for 3:00 - 4:50 p.m. on Monday, October 31 and Wednesday, December 14, 2016. If you live outside the Portland region, contact me during the first week of the term for potential proctoring accommodations.

COURSE TEXTBOOK
The required textbook is ''Business Mathematics,' 13th Edition by Clendenen, Salzman, Miller, Prentice Hall 2015 with MyMathLab (MML). It is available at the PCC Bookstores. Note that MyMathLab is a required resource for this course.

There are several options to choose how you want to purchase the textbook with MyMathLab:
1. Purchase a new text that comes with a MyMathLab Access code. (about $200)
2. Purchase a used text and separately purchase access to MyMathLab. (about $250)
3. Only purchase access to MyMathLab where you obtain access to the electronic version of the text. (about $100)

If considering a purchase or lease of the text from other sources outside PCC, please be careful: past students have experienced significant delivery delays or received the incorrect text. Additionally, the text may not come with MML. The textbook is an excellent investment in your education and for future reference.

SOFTWARE, HARDWARE, AND PLUG-IN REQUIREMENTS
You need to have access to a computer connected to the internet at least several times per week. Be sure to have the following updated software installed on your computer:
-Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft PowerPoint (A reader is also available) to read the online modules.
-Microsoft Word or Libre Office (a free office suite package) so you may submit worksheets electronically. Other software used for submitting worksheets requires prior approval from the instructor.
-MyMathLab is a required component of this course. Note the link will redirect you to an alternate site from the publisher.
-Familiarity with file management, email and attachments, discussion boards, and the internet.

CALCULATOR
A calculator is required for this course. The recommended (not required) calculator is the TI-30SX. Most other business or scientific calculators are sufficient for this class. Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom during exams.

FINAL THOUGHTS
