Covers the basic features and effects of Native American religious revitalization movements, European backgrounds of Christian denominations, development of different religious groups, church-state relations, the struggle for religious liberty and how they shaped the beliefs, behaviors and institutions of colonial America and the early United States. - The main premise of HST246 is: American [his]story cannot be fully understood without understanding the countrys religious history. Without an overall understanding of religion, we miss out on some of the fundamental motivations of human history and thought, including competing ideas about liberty of conscience, the free exercise of religion and the separation of church and state (i.e., what does the prohibition on government from making any law respecting an establishment of religion mean in practice). o Is it possible to be an educated person without having considered questions of why we are here and what is expected of us? (Neil Postman, Building a Bridge to the 18th Century, p. 172) The major themes of HST246 are religious diversity and religious liberty. Various religions (different denominations of Christianity predominantly) have shaped the beliefs, behaviors and institutions of the United States. All Americans of whatever religion, varying degrees of religious adherence and practice, or no faith at all should learn about this heritage to become better informed citizens.
