Details about this class

Thank you for your interest in BI 121 - Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology Part 1.

This course surveys anatomical terminology, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, and the following systems:  integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous.

Here is some information about the upcoming course:

• This class will have two weekly meetings:

  • Laboratory will meet Tuesday for approximately three hours on Cascade campus in Jackson Hall 219. The instructor requests that students wear masks in the laboratory.
  • Application Hour for lecture will meet on Thursday for one hour remotely via Zoom.

• Each week, there will be pre-recorded student guided lessons for learners with embedded pre-lecture homework assignments, multiple attempt pre-lab homework assignments, and lab quizzes to complete.  The application hour is devoted to active learning, solving problem sets, and assessments. Here is a schematic of our weekly structure

PLEASE NOTE, regarding required textbooks:

  • The 3rd edition of "Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology" by Kenneth Saladin & Robin McFarland is not required.  This free OpenStax version is sufficient for our needs in Bi 121 & Bi 122.
  • Connect access is not required for this course.
  •  The Bi 121-2 Survival Guide has a free fillable version with a drawing pad in our D2L brightspace course shell, so it is not required that you purchase the one from the bookstore.

In consideration of the current pandemic, in the case of illness, medical emergency, school closure,  or related events:

  • Face-to-face laboratory meetings and Application Hour Zoom meetings are optional.
  • Lecture exams and lab quizzes can be rescheduled.
  • Application hour assignments, pre-labs, lab projects, and pre-lecture homeworks have "functional due dates" without late penalties.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at rachel.thwing@pcc.edu.

Here is my origin story from research to teaching.

Application Hour for this course requires the use of Zoom for meetings.

You will not be required to utilize the webcam or microphone function, but it is encouraged :)

Application Hour assignments will open in your PCC google drive and Microsoft Office 365 Education is free for students
