Details about this class

Welcome to Spanish 101! I look forward to working with you! This course has 2 required synchronous ZOOM meetings per week, as well as a weekly 30 minute video chat with a classmate that you can schedule whenever you like. We will spend much of our ZOOM sessions practicing in small groups in breakout rooms. Developing speaking proficiency is a primary goal of this class, so camera use is expected during our ZOOM sessions. We also make sure to incorporate lots of cultural learning activities, music, and fun!

Students should expect to commit 8-12 hours per week to this class, which is equivalent to the time that you would usually spend in the classroom on campus plus time completing a homework load appropriate for a 4-credit, college-level course (generally two-three hours outside of class for each credit hour). This time commitment includes both synchronous work (e.g. class meetings, partner practice) and asynchronous work (e.g. completing activities in the online workbook (“VHL Supersite”), discussion board posts, VoiceThreads, and written assessments).

Students are highly recommended to take SPA 101 and SPA 111C simultaneously.

SPA 111C is a one-credit conversation course that meets twice a week for 25 minutes (50 min/week). For this particular SPA 101 (CRN 40127), your recommended 111C is CRN 40504, TR from 6:00 to 6:25. This conversation class meets right before your 101,  and it’s taught by the same instructor.

Why should I take SPA 111C?  In the conversation class,  you will have an opportunity to practice what you are learning in SPA 101. You will be working on your listening and speaking skills with classmates, with your instructor’s guidance and support. Students who don’t take 111C will have 10 hours less of practice of the Spanish language than the classmates who take 111C. 101 + 111C is the perfect combination to develop your communicative skills (aural and oral), and communication is the main goal of our SPA program.

Technology

Required technology for this course includes a computer with a reliable Internet connection, microphone, and webcam. If you have questions or concerns about the required technology, please contact your instructor. Platforms for this course include Zoom, D2L Brightspace, and VHL Supersite (included in the textbook package sold through the PCC bookstore).

Please do NOT buy a used textbook because it will not include the required code to the online platform, which costs more than the package available at the PCC bookstore. The same textbook/platform will be used in SPA 101-103, and no further purchase is required.
