Reporting student misconduct

It is our responsibility to provide students with excellent educational and co-curricular programs at PCC. It is, in turn, our students’ responsibility to observe campus rules and regulations designed to assure a positive climate for learning and development. So, what happens when a student’s behavior is not in compliance with our established expectations? There are times when misconduct or problem behavior should be reported in order to protect our educational environment, academic integrity, or the safety and security of our community members and physical spaces.

Reports of student misconduct are reviewed as they come in by Student Conduct and Retention Coordinators – professional staff in the campus Dean of Student Development offices that are trained to assess and act on reports. We investigate all allegations of conduct policy violations and behavioral concerns. The Policy on Student Conduct is designed to communicate the expectations that PCC has of students. It serves as a guide for students to understand their responsibility for appropriate behavior and respect for others in our community. We follow a process rooted in student development theory that assures students receive due process and are treated fairly, while protecting the safety and rights of others. We partner closely with the Department of Public Safety and multiple campus and community resources in seeking timely resolution of conduct concerns. Campus Behavioral Intervention Teams (BIT) are an additional tool that may be used in the conduct process.

In general, a conduct incident should be reported for behaviors that may violate the Policy on Student Conduct. Here are a few examples of the categories of policy violations that may be reported:

  • Failure to comply with a directive from a PCC faculty or staff member or other administrative policies
  • Failure to comply with expectations that have been previously set up in the syllabus or behavioral agreement
  • Theft
  • Property damage
  • Physical altercation or intimidation
  • Intentional or unintentional harm
  • Disruptive behavior

Campus Behavioral Intervention Teams

The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) exists to help keep the PCC community safe and to connect distressed students to appropriate support services. BITs operate on all PCC campuses and are comprised of a team of professionals representing Dean of Student Development, Conduct and Retention, Counseling, Public Safety, Disability Services, Advising and Instructional leadership. We work collectively to gather and assess pertinent information from instructors, resource providers, and others related to the behavioral concerns. We then determine the best course of action to promote safety and security on campus, as well as the well being and success of the student. BIT members receive training and follow nationally recognized standards to assess student behavior and threat.
