Lift Every Voice and Sing: Songs of Justice, Hope, and Strength

Uplifting songs of hope and strength, love and respect, friendship and life – these are the inspirations for PCC Rock Creek Choirs’ spring concert.

As we end a tumultuous year, we hope this free concert will bring the community together, building bridges through music. Social justice themes and the power of music have been on the minds of students at this time. As choir student Than Vu says, “For me, social justice pertains to the actions necessary to change our society, culture, and government to ensure equality and peace as best as we, fellow humans, can. Small and simple actions can make a difference. Singing about social justice may seem insignificant, but I for one have grown my perspective and empathy for those suffering just by singing their music.

In addition to featuring larger choral works like Glory, which received an Oscar for Best Original Song in the film Selma, the spring concert will highlight inspiring classics such as Lean on Me and We Shall Overcome, alongside small ensembles of music chosen and produced by the students themselves.

All donations will benefit the “Bridges to the Future” scholarship created by the PCC Foundation in 2020. This scholarship will benefit students from communities of color, students who identify as LGBTQ+, students living with a disability, and students who have or are currently experiencing poverty.

Dr. Samuel Barbara, Director of Choirs at PCC Rock Creek, says that all of the songs feature important Civil Rights Era messages, words of hope, justice, and freedom. This includes music to empower the LGBTQ+ community and the title song, Lift Every Voice and Sing – often referred to as the “Black National Anthem” – presents a message of hope through adversity, heralding equality for all people.
