Mechanical Engineering Technology

As a mechanical engineering technician, you will help engineers plan, design, manufacture, or inspect machines and machine tools, as well as heating and air conditioning systems.

You will design calculations, select equipment, and develop quality control systems for manufacturing, building design, domestic water supply, and gas and liquid supply facilities.

Technicians assist in the administration and management of engineering and manufacturing projects by doing design calculations, computer-aided drafting, specification writing, sales, inspection, production scheduling, and cost estimating.

As a graduate of our mechanical engineering technology program, you may work for manufacturers, consulting engineering firms, contractors, educational institutions and equipment sales organizations.

What will I do on the job?

Mechanical Engineering Technicians aid engineers in planning, designing, manufacturing, and inspecting:

  • Machines and machine tools
  • Gauges
  • Molds
  • Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems
  • Manufacturing and customer products
  • Gases and liquid supply facilities
  • Fire protection systems

Mechanical engineering technicians will solve problems in energy management for use in "clean rooms" or other controlled environments. They will use drafting programs such as Inventor for machine design and manufacturing.

How much can I earn?

Approximate starting salaries in the Portland area:

  • Starting salary with AAS degree: $30,000 - $40,000.
  • With experience: $40,000 - $50,000.
