Josette Beach, RDH, MS
Josette BeachThank you for visiting the PCC Dental Program website. I am the Director of the three dental programs at Portland Community College. I graduated from the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs and can testify to the excellent quality of instruction you will receive in the programs. I have practiced as a dental hygienist since1978, began teaching in the PCC DH program in 1982 and I have enjoyed working as the director of our dental programs since 2005. Special highlights in my career are meeting the newly accepted students as they enter the program and congratulating them upon graduation and entry into the workforce!
Arleen Shannon
Arleen ShannonArleen has worked in the PCC Dental Department for 19 years. She graduated from Oakland City College in California with her Dental Assisting Certificate. Arleen is a wonderful friend to all of our students!
Fabiola Romero
Fabiola RomeroFabiola is the front desk receptionist for the dental clinic. She helps answer patient questions, coordinates our student’s patient assignments as well as schedules observation time in the clinic for those that are applying for the dental hygiene program. She has a dental assisting background and enjoys working in an educational setting with our eager student’s and informing the community of our low cost dental services.
Dr. Nancy Pilgrim
Dr. Nancy PilgrimDentistry has been a part of my life for 27 years. I was born and raised in Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota Dental School. Currently I teach Medical Emergencies, Dental Anatomy, Head and Neck Anatomy, Dental Histology, Oral Pathology and Nitrous Oxide Sedation.
Dr. April Love
Dr. April LoveDr. Love graduated from University of Michigan in 1967 as a dental hygienist (BSDH). She worked in private practice while attending U of Michigan to become a dentist and graduated with her DDS in 1979. Her hospital residency brought her to OHSU and she remained in the Portland area with her private dental practice until 2001 when she retired. In 1980, she worked in PCC’s DA department and saw the quality of education offered in the whole dental department. From that time until her retirement, she always hired PCC graduates because of the high levels of professionalism and competency PCC’s graduates were taught. Since retirement, she has worked as a Dental Hygiene dentist and loves contributing to the quality education that she so admired.
Dr. Daniel Blickenstaff
Dr. Daniel BlickenstaffAfter growing up in northern California, Dr Blickenstaff earned his BSc, MSc & DDS from The Ohio State University, graduating from dental school in 1977. In the early 1980’s he taught in the restorative dentistry department at OSU while maintaining a private practice in Columbus, Ohio. In 1993, he returned to the west coast to continue practicing dentistry. He has been a clinical instructor in the restorative dentistry clinic at PCC since 2011. He maintains a private practice using physiological neuromuscular dentistry to treat Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and Oral-Facial Pain. When he is not practicing dentistry he enjoys being a high school football official, cooking and traveling with his wife to visit their 4 children & 3 granddaughters.
Sandie Curren, RDH, BSDH, EPDH, MSEd
Sandie CurrenSandie is the 1st Year Lead Instructor and Clinic Coordinator. She graduated from PCC in 2002, completed her bachelor degree through Oregon Institute of Technology in 2005 and obtained her Master's degree in Post Secondary & Adult Education in 2007. She teaches the 1st year Theory courses and Clinics, Radiology I & II and Cariology. She is actively involved in the American Dental Hygienists’ Association on both the state and local levels. In addition to teaching at PCC, she continues to work in private practice one day per week. She and her husband of 30 years have six children and enjoy reading, traveling, and entertaining family and friends.
Cara Kao-Young, RDH, BS
Cara Kao-YoungCara Kao-Young graduated from the PCC Dental Hygiene Program in 1990 and received her Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University in 2001. She is a member of American Dental Hygienists' Association and sits on the Government Relations Council for the Oregon Dental Hygienists' Association. Cara's passion is connecting students with underserved populations in our community who need access to oral health care. She has partnered with Medical Teams International to lead groups of students to other countries to improve their oral health as well. Cara is married with two sons, who keep her very busy. She enjoys art, music and reading.
Anne Jackson, RDH, MS
Anne JacksonAnne has been a part of the PCC family for more than 30 years, first as dental hygiene program faculty and, eventually, as director of the Dental Sciences department. Now retired from the administrative role, she teaches clinical dental hygiene part time and enjoys escorting students on international trips with Medical Teams International.
Krysten Clist, RDH, BS
Krysten ClistIn 1977 Krysten graduated from the PCC Dental Hygiene Program. She also graduated from Portland State University in 1991 receiving her Bachelor of Science. She has been teaching part-time at PCC since March 1979 in the Dental Hygiene Program. She has taught a variety of courses to both first and second year dental hygiene students and dental assistants. She is currently teaching clinical dental hygiene to both classes and Periodontology I to the second year students. She is member of the American Dental Hygiene Association and currently president of The Oregon Dental Hygiene Scholarship and Loan Fund which she has served as a member since 1993. She still works in private practice and enjoys traveling, spending time at her beach home, photography, scraping booking, and boating.
Peggy Lewelling, EFDA, RDH, BSDH
Peggy LewellingPeggy Lewelling is a part-time clinical instructor for both the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs at Portland Community College. She also teaches the Intro to Restorative course in the Dental Hygiene program. She is a past graduate of both Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs at PCC as well. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University. Peggy practices clinical dental hygiene 2 days a week in private practice. In her spare time she enjoys the beautiful Oregon landscape by participating in many outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, beach combing and camping with her family. Even though Peggy is an Oregon native, the sun has a special place in her heart, so she likes to travel to as many warm sunny places she can find outside of Oregon as well.
Linda Munro, RDH, BS
Linda MunroLinda has been a Dental Hygienist since 1977 and has worked as an educator since 1985. She currently teaches clinical Dental Hygiene, Local Anesthesia, and Oral Health Education. Married, she and her husband have a son, are empty nesters, and love to travel and garden.
Mickey Nearhood, RDH, MSEd
Mickey NearhoodMickey graduated from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah in 1981. She has been a clinical instructor in the PCC Dental Hygiene Program since 1997. In addition to teaching clinical dental hygiene, Mickey teaches Introduction to Pharmacology to students enrolled in the PCC Dental Assisting Program. She continues to be active in her professional association, the Oregon Dental Hygienists' Association, serving as president in 1996 and 2004. Mickey is the mother of three and grandmother of four. She and her husband, Don, enjoy traveling and have traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Western Europe.
Joclyn Thornburg, RDH, BS
Joclyn ThornburgJoclyn grew up in Southwest Portland and graduated from the U of O (now OHSU) Dental Hygiene School in 1971 and has been providing patient care in private practice ever since, She began teaching clinical dental hygiene at the Dental School and has been teaching at PCC since 1999. She has taught Community Dental Hygiene, Public Health, and currently teaches Pharmacology. Being part of training the dental hygienists of the future has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her career. She volunteers on the Medical Teams International dental van in the Portland area and continues to work part time in private practice. She loves living in the beautiful Northwest where there are so many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and to go hiking and camping.
Monica Monsantofils, RDH, BS, PG Dip DS
Monica MonsantofilsMonica is a Clinic Instructor and Community Oral Health Lecturer, is a graduate of Portland Community College Dental Hygiene Program, BSDH Eastern Washington University, PG Dip DS Kings College London. She works with students in a variety of community oral health programs for underserved populations to promote health. In addition to teaching Monica also works in a periodontic and implantology specialty practice. She is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, BDP Study Club and volunteers with multiple organizations for oral health. Monica enjoys working with students to maintain the excellent education standards of PCC’s dental hygiene program and the dental profession.
Nancy Kurtz, RDH, BS
Nancy KurtzNancy graduated from the PCC Dental Hygiene Program in 1975 and received her Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University in 2004. She has been a practicing dental hygienist since 1975 and a clinical dental hygiene instructor since 2004. In addition to teaching clinical dental hygiene and practicing dental hygiene, she has been a member of Gum Gardner's study club for 15 years and has served as its co-president. Nancy is the mother of two and became a grandmother to her first grandchild in March of 2012. She and her husband, Dave, have been married for 39 years and enjoy traveling with the Portland Triumph Owners Association in their restored British sports cars.
Monica Lyster, RDH, BS
Monica LysterMonica graduated from the PCC Dental Hygiene program in 1977.She received her Bachelor's Degree from Linfield College in 2006. She has been teaching clinical DH at PCC since 2006. In addition to working at PCC, she works 3 days/week at the Veteran's Dental Clinic. Monica is currently taking classes at PSU to get a graduate certificate in Adult Education. She enjoys travelling and hiking in her spare time.
