Moriarty Named CEO of the Year by Community College Trustee Group

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) recently named PCC President Daniel F. Moriarty CEO of the year. The national association will present Moriarty with the 2000 Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Officer Award at its annual convention in Nashville, Tenn. in October. Moriarty has been president of Portland Community College since 1986.The Portland Community College board of directors nominated Moriarty for the award, praising him for creating "a climate of success and robust growth despite severe budget cutbacks in Oregon." The board also noted Moriarty’s pursuit of strategic alliances with business, public sector and other educational institutions, which allowed the college to wield greater influence with city and state leaders. The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) is a nonprofit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern more than 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States, Canada, and England, and make decisions affecting more than 11 million students annually. A native of New York City, Moriarty has 30 years of experience as a college administrator and teacher. He holds key leadership positions in civic and educational organizations in the state, region and country. He was elected chair of the board of directors of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and served in 1995-96. In 1996, he was appointed to serve on the executive committee of the American Council on Education. In 1989-90, Moriarty chaired the Oregon Council of Community College Presidents. In 1990-91, he was elected chair of the Presidents’ Academy of AACC. He has been a board member of the Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Private Industry Council, the Portland Leaders Roundtable, the City of Portland Future Focus, the St. Vincent Hospital Advisory Board. He currently serves as vice-president of the Business-Education Compact, is a member of the Portland Progress Board, and a commissioner of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Moriarty has initiated nationally recognized programs at Portland Community College, including the most recent U.S. Department of Labor award for the PCC and Mt. Hood Dislocated Worker program. He holds a doctoral degree in higher education from George Washington University and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Moriarty is a resident of Lake Oswego.
