This annual observance reminds leaders, educators, and citizens around the world that reading and writing skills are essential for a better society. And literacy represents more than just the ability to read and write\u2014it&#8217;s a basic human right that unlocks access to many freedoms and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>But despite progress globally, 739 million adults (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/literacy\">UIS, 2025<\/a>) still cannot read and write. This makes International Literacy Day\u2019s mission that much more urgent.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, the International Literacy Day (ILD) theme is \u201cLiteracy for people, the planet and prosperity\u201d. As of a 2024 study, <a href=\"https:\/\/psuvanguard.com\/can-you-read-this-the-american-literacy-crisis-hits-oregon\/\">Oregon ranked as the worst state<\/a> in 4th grade reading text scores.
