Inspired by Everybody Reads author Matthew Desmond and his book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, these videos capture experiences from people who have struggled to keep a roof over their heads. They are ready to make their experiences more widely known.
As of November of last year I've been homeless I feel like I am not a priority within this whole housing situation in Portland I am going to live in my car with my service animal I ended up having to live in a tent in my friend's backyard Having to worry about school and work and where I'm going to live is very taxing I am planning on pulling out my 401k savings to make sure that I can pay rent It can be really hard to transition from being in foster care to living on your own I was forced into this situation because of the higher screening barriers in Portland I am a homeless father of four Nobody had anywhere for me to go It's a way real estate agents see to make a little extra cash It's kind of sad knowing that sense of convenience is not going to be accessible to me There's about six people in a two bedroom one bath We created a bedroom out of the basement in order to make the rent more affordable I realized how quickly and easily you may not have a key These people with all this money came in here and just tore down a lot of history We just got a letter from our landlord raising our rent It almost seems impossible when the rent is so expensive I walked out with my two suitcases I would like to share a story with you about a person I couldn't help Trying to find my own apartment has been quite the struggle
